Why English Can Be So Intimidating

When trying to cook an unfamiliar dish, I often get frustrated by the nose-bleeding ingredients written in English. Then when you google them, ito lang pala ‘yun:

Coriander = Kinchay

Red Bird’s Eye Chillies = Siling Labuyo

Flageolet = Buto ng Baguio Beans

Courgettes = Other term for Zucchini (Hawig ng Pepino)

Cantaloupe = Melon

Bamboo Shoots = Labong

Kaffir Lime Leaves = Dahon ng Kalamansi

Porcini = Mushroom

Anchovies = Dilis

Beansprouts = Toge

Shallot = Maliit na Sibuyas

Harissa = A kind of Hot Chili Sauce

Watercress = Lampaka

Mange Tout = Beans ulit

“You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.”

“Nostalgia - it’s delicate, but potent. Teddy told me that in Greek, ‘nostalgia’ literally means ‘the pain from an old wound.’ It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the wheel, it’s called the carousel. It let’s us travel the way a child travels - around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved.” —Mad Men
